Los códigos postales son un sistema de códigos postales utilizado por el Servicio Postal de los Estados Unidos desde 1963. El término ZIP, siglas de Zone Improvement Plan, fue elegido para sugerir que el correo viaja de manera más eficiente y, por lo tanto, más rápido cuando los remitentes utilizan el código en la dirección postal. El formato básico consta de cinco dígitos numéricos. Un código ZIP + 4 extendido, introducido en 1983, incluye los cinco dígitos del código postal, un guión y cuatro dígitos adicionales que determinan una ubicación más específica dentro de un código postal determinado.
