Os códigos postais são um sistema de códigos postais usados pelo Serviço Postal dos Estados Unidos desde 1963. O termo ZIP, sigla de Zone Improvement Plan, foi escolhido para sugerir que o correio viaja com mais eficiência e, portanto, mais rapidamente quando os remetentes usam o código no endereço postal. O formato básico consiste em cinco dígitos numéricos. Um código ZIP+4 estendido, introduzido em 1983, inclui os cinco dígitos do CEP, um hífen e quatro dígitos adicionais que determinam um local mais específico dentro de um determinado CEP.
